      The article discusses Haiti's social conditions, poverty, pollution and practice of vodou. The role that the ocean plays in Haitian vodou ceremonies, including the mambo priestess' invoking the Iwa, or spirits of the sea, is discussed. An overview of the United Nations (UN) in Haiti, including in regard to Haitians' attitudes that it caused a cholera epidemic in the country, is provided.
