Melvyn Burk does not claim to have the ultimate cure for painful, hard-to-heal wounds commonly associated with diabetes, but he's working on technology that he says substantially could speed the healing process. Burk's one-employee company, Oxyfast Corp., plans to begin selling an electronic bandage. The device uses a synthetic membrane that pulls oxygen from the air and directs it via a small tube to a bandage taped over a wound. To prove the product's value in treating the wounds, Oxyfast has commissioned a trial of the bandage at the Summa Wound Care Center of Northeast Ohio, which is part of Summa Health System's St. Thomas Hospital in Akron. Burk co-founded the company and developed the technology with partner Daniel Scherson, a chemistry professor a Case Western Reserve University.
