- Abstract:
The article examines the legal aspects of school equalization in the United States as of September 1998. The Ohio Supreme Court ordered the legislature to equalize funding for public schools. The court held that the school finance system, by relying heavily on property taxes, creates inequalities, with students in the more affluent areas generally enjoying better facilities. The equalization cases started in the 1970s. In 1973, an appeal in a case challenging Texas's reliance on local property taxation for school financing was considered by the U.S. Supreme Court.
