    • Abstract:
The article discusses the timing and origins of what the authors refer to as a pessimistic turn and nativism in Dutch attitudes toward immigration during the early 21st century. The article examines the significance of the assassination of Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002 and his political party the Lijst Pim Fortuyn, anti-Islamic attitudes in the Netherlands, and the rise of Dutch anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders. It also discusses the placement of blame upon progressive elites in the Netherlands for Muslim migration to the Netherlands.
