An essay is presented on religious belief system and interest of American poets in solitary contemplation of death. Topics discussed include review of Wallace Stevens and E.E. Cummings work of spiritual inclinations and gestures in the past, reflection of writer Leon Surette on the influence of orientalists and theosophists and such as Allen Upward and Madame Blavatsky on modernist poets, and documentation of Cummings and Stevens work by writer Glen MacLeod.
