    • Abstract:
The article presents a reprint of the article by The Evergreen State College family studies professor Stephanie Coontz which appeared in the summer of 1995 issue of the journal. The changes undergone by the American family structure from the colonial period to the late 20th century is said to have been governed by economic conditions and social values. It is claimed that the male breadwinner and female homemaker model of the 1950s cannot be revived in its traditional form.
