History
West Ashley, a charming suburb nestled within the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, is steeped in centuries of captivating history. Recognized as the very birthplace of Charleston itself, West Ashley is home to one of the area's most beloved landmarks, the South Windermere Center. Originally sprawling across 120 acres of land, this area saw a remarkable transformation back in 1953 when William Ackerman, joined by a group of partners, turned humble cabbage fields into a thriving shopping center. Through a delightful blend of luck and ingenuity, the South Windermere Center eventually blossomed into a vibrant community. Through the generosity of William Ackerman and the support of South Windermere Realtors, the West Ashley Library found its home at the rear of the shopping center, courtesy of a generous land donation. With the backing of county funds, the West Ashley Library warmly welcomed its first patrons on April 20, 1964. Today, the West Ashley Library remains a cherished cornerstone of the Charleston community, offering a vital haven for enrichment. It beckons both visitors and locals alike, inviting them to discover knowledge, find inspiration, or embrace moments of quiet reflection within its welcoming confines.
