To draw the attention of teachers to the many kinds of bias that can be found in print, the 10 chapters of this monograph review a number of studies of ways in which biased texts may affect children's attainments as well as their attitudes. The chapters that comprise Parts One and Two center on the more specific issues that relate to the influence of the printed media on the reader, with the three chapters in Part One examining the nature and extent of this influence on attitudes and the three in Part Two examining its effect on actual reading achievement. Two of the three chapters making up Part Three focus on the political and psychological aspects of the printed media, specfically reporting on the various content analysis studies that expose the bias found in children's literature, comic books, and textbooks, and on additional studies highlighting changes in attitudes resulting from content revisions. The third chapter in this section examines the reactions of people and social institutions in a democratic society to the printed media. This theme is continued in the chapter comprising Part Four, which concentrates on the racial, sexual, and social class content of children's reading materials in Great Britain. (FL)
