Agents, Spies and Informers. (English)
- Abstract:
The network of agents of Soviet security organs was the primary "implement" during the time of sovietising Estonia and suppressing the resistance movement in the years following the Second World War. Agents and secret collaborators have been written about in newspaper articles and historical literature. KGB documents concerning their work have also been published. At the same time, the main "visible" trace of their work has practically not been disclosed at all - reports written by agents. The report on "forest brothers" (Estonian patriotic partisans) by agent Välk (Lightening) published in this selection of documents is particularly thorough and precise, altogether providing a small insight into the everyday life of forest brothers. In addition to the work of the network of agents, the security organs received information from unprompted denunciations, which have always come to light everywhere during difficult times, whether they be politically motivated or (probably more frequently) motivated by personal animosity and self-interest. The documents below show Komsomol and Communist Party activists as the persons who gathered these kinds of denunciations (but also simply rumours and the boasts of village braggarts) and passed them on to the security organs.
