- Abstract:
A critique is presented of Jotham's fable from the Old Testament of the Bible, found in the Book of Judges 9:8-15, which deals with trees. The translation of the Hebrew word for thornbush is discussed, as well as the debate over what the bush represents. The author argues that it stands for the Hebrew judge Gideon and his house, as opposed to the king Abimelech, and is meant to convey themes of the suitability of leaders, destruction, and fratricide.
