- Abstract:
The article presents an examination of the history of the Levant Company. The British company was granted a monopoly over trade with the Ottoman Empire in the eastern Mediterranean in 1592 and was rivaled only by the East India Company in terms of riches and reputation. The company developed profitable trade centers, dealing largely in silk, in Istanbul and Izmir, Turkey as well as in Aleppo, Syria. Additionally, while the East India Company came to be seen as a colonizing force in India, the Levant Company exercised no imperial motivations.
