The article focuses on the life and death of Mary Pinchot Meyer, the mistress of John F. Kennedy, friend of Jackie Kennedy and ex-wife of Cord Meyer. The author describes his experience as a reporter for the Washington Star when Meyer was found murdered. The author reflects on the social climate in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., at the time and on how her death was reported in the news. Particular attention is given to the various conspiracy theories surrounding her murder and to Meyer's life in Georgetown, as well as the social condition of women in that town.
