- Abstract:
The article focuses on the world's most dangerous snake Russell's viper found in Sri Lanka. The Russell's viper is named after Patrick Russell, a Scottish physician employed by East India Co., who wrote a guide to India's venomous snakes. According to Mark O'Shea, writer of a new book, Venomous Snakes of the World, the prize for the world's most dangerous snake goes to the Russell's viper found in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Russell's viper is more dangerous than any other snake because its venom is highly toxic, and because it comes into contact with more people. Victims of the Sri Lankan Russell's viper tend to be treated with Indian anti-venom, the effectiveness of which is compromised because it is based on venom from the Indian Russell's viper not the Sri Lankan one, and it can have nasty side-effects.
