- Abstract:
The internet is aging, and as early as the 2060s, there may be more dead users than alive on platforms like Facebook. The fate of user data after death is a critical issue for the future of the internet. Currently, there is little preparation for this, and it poses a threat to the economy based on targeted ads. Whoever controls dead-user data will have significant power over access to the past. The author argues that we need to develop a plan for the stewardship of digital remains, considering questions of privacy, accessibility, and purpose. This responsibility should not be left solely to Big Tech, but should be approached as a long-term intergenerational project. The author calls on governments to take action before it's too late.
