    • Abstract:
Since the beginning of the eighties of the last century the German sociologist and political philosopher Jürgen Habermas developed the idea of a `constitutional patriotism' in order to create civil identification with a democratic nation state on a non-emotional basis. In Habermas' view `emotional identification with the nation' is opposed to the 'rationality of the transnational'. By working out his concept of constitutional patriotism Habermas touches upon key questions for the realisation of fundamentally democratic, transnational political structures. Simultaneously the article investigates the European bearing of Habermas' concept through the idea of 'euro patriotism', which has recently been elaborated by the Anglo-German philosopher Jan-Werner Muller.
