In light of the developments in Argentina, Sharnak concludes that, during Uruguay's amnesty debate, some influential policy circles were disincentivized from the pursuit of similar trials. Uruguay has been largely overlooked within the abundant historiography on the military rule in the Southern Cone in the 1970s and 1980s, the subsequent transition to democracy and the question of extensive human rights violations.
