There had been news reports of a romance between the 22-year-old Spitz and Harshbarger, which he laughed off. "I'm too young for Donna de Varona", he said mock ruefully, referring to the 25-year-old American swimming star, "and I'm too old for Jo Harshbarger." Mark had been planning to stay on in Munich for a couple more days, but Olympic and U.S. officials had decided that for security reasons, it would be best for him to leave that very day.
