      Objetivo: Evaluar la influencia del capital social en los procesos de desarrollo local de dos municipios matanceros. Materiales y Métodos: El capital social constituyó el ámbito de indagación y se evaluó mediante una encuesta que comprendió cinco aspectos: asociatividad, confianza, participación, acceso a información e independencia económica. Para el trabajo se conformaron grupos focales, con 10 pobladores, que pertenecen a los 10 asentamientos de mayor concentración poblacional en dos municipios de la provincia Matanzas, para un total de 100 encuestados. Los datos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva con el uso de histogramas de frecuencia. Además, se correlacionaron las variables de estudio. Todos los análisis se realizaron con el paquete estadístico InfoStat®, versión 1.1. Resultados: Para ejecutar sus metas personales, en 80% de los consejos populares la población solo confía en sus familiares y amigos, como garante de su desarrollo y el de su familia. En 50% de los consejos, las personas perciben que, aunque son informados y consultados, raramente participan en la elaboración de las decisiones. En seis de los 10 consejos con los que se trabajó, la ciudadanía considera que el gobierno establece las vías para que se acceda de forma permanente a la información actualizada, suficiente y pertinente para la labor que realiza. Conclusiones: En los escenarios estudiados, el capital social constituye un elemento clave como recurso para el desarrollo. A su vez, sustenta las interacciones interpersonales y organizacionales, y permite comprender que dicho capital es un producto del sistema de relaciones económicas, políticas, culturales e institucionales del territorio. Materials and Methods: Social capital constituted the inquiry scope and was evaluated through a survey that comprised five aspects: associativity, confidence, participation, access to information and economic independence. For the work focal groups were formed, with 10 inhabitants, which belong to the 10 settlements of higher population concentration in two municipalities of Matanzas province, for a total of 100 surveyed people. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics using frequency histograms. In addition, the study variables were correlated. All the analyses were carried out with the statistical package InfoStat®, version 1.1.
