The article discusses the ecological recovery of the former battlefield in the Battle of Verdun in northeastern France during the World War I, focusing on the discovery of new plants and animals thriving in the region and adapting to the landforms of shell craters and underground shelters. It presents a brief history of the Verdun region since the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1971 and the light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data tracking plants and animals in the region.
