- Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to examine the development ofbusiness activity in the Chinese society during the Great Depression, precisely in Taiping.The economic crisis in 1929 to 1935 caused Chinese trader in Taiping to face economic pressures at a maximum level due to a decline in local and international market purchasing power. However, this situation does not affect the involvement of Chinese society in business activities. British documents and reports during the review period demonstrated that the Chinese community in the city actively engaged in various business activities in an effort to improve their standard of living. Chinese business advertisements as shown in the Taipeng Weekly Record clearly reflect the development of Chinese business activities in Taiping during the recession of the world economy. Thus, the Chinese community in Taiping still pursuing their involvement in business activities despite in the crisis and economic recession. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
