- Abstract:
The article features professionals connected with libraries. The University of Tennessee (UT)-Knoxville announced the Otis H. Stephens Jr., a UT professor and Mary T. Stephens, his wife, have now fully funded an endowment that will make library resources more accessible to students with visual and other physical disabilities. The Stephenses, both blind since birth, established the Otis H. and Mary T. Stephens Library Endowment during the university's 21st Century Campaign in 1997. The income from it will purchase new technology and equipment for the UT Libraries, such as reading machines and low-vision aids. The American Library Association (ALA) announced that Janet Swan Hill and Nann Blaine Hilyard have been elected to its executive board. They will each serve a 3-year term beginning in June 2004. In other news from ALA, Sanford Berman and Norman Horrocks have received the ALA honorary membership, an honor conferred in recognition for contributions of lasting importance to libraries and librarianship. The Brooklyn Public Library has announced the appointment of Judy Zuckerman as assistant director of children and family services. In this position, she will guide senior managers and program specialists to develop programs and services geared toward youth and families in Brooklyn.
