Christians, Jews, and Muslims during Middle Ages. Conflict and cooperation in the Mediterranean Area.
    • Abstract:
The impact of the Early Islam on West European polities is a very controversial issue. On economic grounds, the conquest of Western Mediterranean Sea by Muslims and its transformation into an inner Muslim lake in the 8th century AD was the decisive historical factor that pushed the European economy to slow and painful backwardness. On cultural grounds, the Islamic conquest forced the civilization to move to the Northern parts of the European continent and to cut from Hellenistic sources of Antiquity, forging a new road towards a Medieval civilization dominated by Germanic elements. Although the thesis is not false on economic grounds, it pays little attention to the important cultural transactions ongoing on the Mediterranean shores and that shaped the philosophy and religion of the whole area.
