CCPL Hosts "Her Lab in Your Life: Women in Chemistry"

Charleston County Public Library is proud to be the first in the state to host a unique traveling exhibit from the Chemical Heritage Foundation entitled "Her Lab in Your Life: Women in Chemistry." This large, visual exhibit will be in the lobby of the Main Library during October and November. The Library obtained the exhibit through a grant from the American Chemistry Society.

"Her Lab in Your Life: Women in Chemistry" takes a fresh look at everyday life, revealing how chemical science and engineering help shape it. Created especially for high school and college students but designed to engage general audiences, this exhibition showcases women chemists who have helped create our modern world and their historic contributions to science and technology. From the action of atoms to the substance of stars, these women have given us new visions of the material world and our place in it.

The exhibition encourages young women to explore possible careers in chemistry by presenting the rich history of women chemists and their contributions to everyday life.

Using the exhibit as a launch pad, there are hands-on activities and events planned in coming weeks with area students. These lessons and activities will be provided to area teachers for use in their classrooms, then passed along to teachers in Columbia when the exhibit moves to Richland County.

For more information about the activities and events planned around this exhibit, please call (843) 805-6930 or e-mail AskAQuestion@ccpl.org. For more information about the exhibit, please visit the following site: http://chemheritage.org/exhibits/ex-nav5-women.html.
