Summer Reading Programs 2004
Date: 4/5/2004

EXERCISE YOUR MIND
DURING THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER
AND WE'LL REWARD YOU!

Charleston, SC – April 5, 2004 – This summer, during the months of June and July, the Charleston County Public Library is rewarding everyone for simply reading!  Starting Tuesday, June 1, and ending Friday, July 30, any person can sign up to participate in an age appropriate summer reading program.

Children ages 1 – 11 are eligible to participate in Step to the Beat, Read!, the children’s summer reading program, and are encouraged to sign up at any of the fifteen Charleston County branch libraries.  If a child is not yet reading on their own, parents are encouraged to sign up their child and read to them. Children are awarded based on the hours they have spent reading.  Upon registration, children will receive a bag filled with a bookmark, pencil, reading log and sticker.  Children who read a minimum of 10 hours receive a summer reading certificate and patch; 20 hours, one pass to the  South Carolina Aquarium and a memo board; 30 hours, one pass to the  Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and a reading medal; and 40 hours, a 2004 summer reading T-shirt.  As an added bonus, four lucky children who read a minimum of 40 hours will be eligible for a Grand Prize package– a birthday party, along with 10 of their friends, at the  Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry.

Teens will also be rewarded.  Young adults ages 12 – 18 are eligible to sign up for Pirates Booty, the teen reading incentive program, and are encouraged to sign up at any of the Charleston County branch libraries.  Teens who participate in the program are awarded based on the number of pages they read.  Anything can be read: books, magazines, comic books, web sites, etc.  Next, teens should stop by any participating branch and complete an entry form and drop it in the prize box or simply log on to www.ccpl.org and enter online.

Each Friday there will be a prize drawing and winners will be randomly selected to receive prizes from the  Charleston IMAX Theatre Charleston County Parks and Recreation, Charleston Battery and other area attractions.  Once a teen has logged a minimum of 500 pages they are eligible for the Grand Prize. Four lucky winners, along with five of their friends, will receive a free viewing of an IMAX film, with a small party catered by Sticky Fingers prior to the show.

Finally, adults are offered a chance to treat themselves with something when they choose to read.  Adults are eligible to participate in Reading Wave, the adult summer reading program.  To be eligible for a weekly prize drawing, participants must complete an entry form and drop it by the closest branch location or simply log on to www.ccpl.org and enter online.  At the end of each week a winner is randomly selected to receive prizes from local attractions.  At the close of the program, randomly selected grand prize winners will receive one of the following: a one night stay at the Old Village Post House in Mt. Pleasant, a dinner for two to one of the Maverick Southern Kitchens restaurants; Slightly North of Broad, High Cotton, or the Old Village Post House, or a flex pass from Charleston Stage allowing the winner and one guest to view three productions of their choosing.
